On November 12th CSUN’s RTDNA was visited by CSUN alumni Halie Cook. Cook is now a freelance photographer for KNBC-TV. She stopped by our meeting to talk about her journey into photojournalism and gave students some great advice.

After graduating from CSUN, Cook entered the photojournalism field. Now after gaining experience in the journalism field she provided great advice for student journalists.

Since students are not able to go on campus, it is hard to gain experience working with professional-grade equipment. Cook assures students that practicing of any kind is great and the most resourceful thing we can do is use our phones. Haile was asked about what to do if you were not sure exactly what type of journalism you wanted to specialize in. She responded that whatever it is you’re passionate about, stay the course, and fully commit. Cook explained that you may regret not fully committing to your original passion.

Haile also shared her experience with covering high-stress situations. Due to today's social climate, Haile gave great advice for covering rallies, protests, and other events where a journalist has to make their safety a number one priority. She told students, “ If you ever feel unsafe or in danger get out of there. Your safety is the number one priority.”

Haile also gave advice about being a female in a male-dominated field. She told students that the best advice she can give is to work hard and prove others wrong.

Haile Cook is a perfect example of a matador who discovered her passion and her drive and determination led her to success. It was great to have her speak with us and hopefully we can have her return to give some more amazing and informative advice.
