During the course of their career journalists may find themselves changing which genre they love to report more than others. Jesse Merrick, has found his calling in the world of sports journalism and on February 16th he visited CSUN’s RTDNA to share his experiences reporting during the pandemic and what has led him to this point.
Jesse grew up in Southern California and sports have always been a huge part of his life. He attended Azusa Pacific University where he played football all four years. After choosing to not attempt playing football professionally, he knew that he still wanted to be involved in sports. As a student athlete he was interested in the sports journalism profession as he could still be around the sports he loves.
After graduating he interned at multiple stations in the Los Angeles area and then landed his first job in Grand Junction, Colorado working at the CBS and FOX affiliate stations. During his two years of working in Colorado Jessie covered many different sporting events like when the Denver Broncos made the Super Bowl and events with local high school sports.
He then worked as a Sports Director in Alabama where he covered major sporting events there. After working at a few other stations Jesse started working in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jesse has been working in Las Vegas for two years and loves what he has been reporting on. He reports for teams like the Raiders, the Golden Knights and other teams all over the state of Nevada and all over the country. Sometimes he even travels to other countries to report on games. He enjoys being able to report on a variety of different sports as well as the sports he personally enjoys.
Jesse gave advice to those looking to break into journalism especially in the sports industry. He encourages practicing on camera and showing your reel to professors and other industry professionals for feedback. When looking for internships and job opportunities Jesse encouraged students to not give up. He also encouraged students to stay in contact with news directors and make sure they know you and get your name out there.
CSUN’s RTDNA was very glad to have Jesse Merrick come speak with us at our meeting and we can’t wait to hopefully have him back.
