On March 2nd, RTDNA was given an Internship, Resume, and Cover Letter Workshop by Professor Stephanie Bluestein. Professor Bluestein is a professor here at CSUN. She also runs the internship program for the journalism department. Professor Blustein is also an alumnus of CSUN. During her studies, she participated in internship programs and then proceeded to turn one of those internships into a full-time job. She has over seventeen years of experience as a reporter, fourteen of those years she worked for the LA Times. Bluestein uses her experience in the field to help guide journalists at CSUN.

Work experience is one of the most important tools students can have when entering any field, especially journalism. Professor Bluestein explained to students how experience can make or break your marketability to potential employers.

Professor Bluestein broke down important components of a resume:

  • Only include relevant information: Only list extracurriculars that relate to your concentration.

  • Be 100% Accurate: Be as honest as you can when listing accomplishments and awards. Don’t over-exaggerate.

  • Do not include high school references.

  • Have your format, facts, and spelling checked by someone else.

  • Keep it to one page

  • Update every 3-6 months

Professor Bluestein also informed students on the correct way to contact and list references. Bluestein suggests making sure the reference knows you well and is open to providing a reference to your potential employer.

Professor Bluestein gave many important tips on how to improve your resume and how to improve your chances of getting hired. She also shows how to format a resume and what a good resume may look like. You can see those examples and watch the full workshop below or on the CSUN RTDNA YouTube channel.
